Alabama joins 13 other states in pledge to address chronic absenteeism crisis in public schools

Alabama is one of fourteen states that have joined an effort to cut chronic student absenteeism by 50% over the next five years. According to Attendance Works, a national and state initiative that pushes for better policy and practice to improve school attendance, chronic school absence rates almost doubled from one out six to almost one out of three students during the COVID-19 pandemic. And post-pandemic absenteeism rates remain higher than before the pandemic.  Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of school for any reason, whether the absence is excused or unexcused, and is affecting students from every economic level and ethnicity. Personnel update: Kay Ivey appoints General David Pritchett as next leader of Alabama National Guard

On Thursday, Gov. Kay Ivey announced the retirement of Major General Sheryl Gordon. Ivey has appointed Brigadier General David Pritchett to replace Gordon as the head of the Alabama National Guard. Ivey commended General Gordon for her distinguished leadership as the adjutant general of the Alabama National Guard over the last six years. Gordon has led the Alabama National Guard since Governor Ivey appointed her in 2017. Ivey credited Gordon with helping land the F-35 Fighter Jets, providing security at the Southern Border, and responding in times of crisis. General Gordon ensured the Alabama National Guard always stood ready. “In 2017, when I tapped General Gordon to serve as adjutant general of the

The truth behind the headlines Part 1: Let’s stand together with the victims of Bubba Copeland

Imagine waking up to find your world or that of a loved one turned upside down. A mother gets a call from her grown daughter, a successful business owner and young mother herself, that something unspeakable, something that defies reason and decency, has happened. Young women find their phones going off, ding, ding, ding. They’re receiving text messages with screenshots of themselves from years ago, candid photos, posted innocently on social media, now plastered across multiple websites alongside explicit and pornographic material. Worse still, the person responsible for all this was someone they trusted and thought they knew. People in Smith Station, Alabama, and the surrounding community lived

Unhealthy air quality lingers across parts of U.S. from drifting Canadian wildfire smoke

For Chicagoans planning a lengthy outdoor run Monday, “today is not necessarily the day for that,” according to Kim Biggs of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Extensive swaths of the northern United States awoke to unhealthy air quality Monday morning or were experiencing it by midafternoon, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s AirNow.gov Smoke and Fire map. Fine particle pollution caused by smoke from Canada’s wildfires is causing a red zone air quality index, meaning it is unhealthy for everyone. The particles, known as PM2.5, are tiny enough to get deep into the lungs and cause short-term problems like coughing and itchy eyes, and in the long run, can affect the lungs and heart.

Controversial anti-vaping legislation carried over in the Alabama Senate

The Alabama Legislature passed dozens of bills on Thursday, with time running out on the 2023 Alabama Regular Legislative Session. Controversial anti-vaping legislation was not one of them. That bill was carried over in the Senate after widespread opposition lobbied Senators not to pass the bill. House Bill 319 (HB319) is sponsored by State Representative Barbara Drummond (D-Mobile). It is being carried in the Alabama Senate by State Senator Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman). Sen. Gudger said, “We do have a few amendments.” State Senator Tim Melson (R-Florence) said the Alabama Cancer Action Network opposed the bill. “This isn’t a quack organization,” Melson said. “They and the Heart Association and the lung people are against this bill.” Gudger said,

Alabama Heart Association opposes penalties on teen smokers

On Wednesday, the Alabama Senate Judiciary Committee gave a favorable report to legislation that would penalize both the sellers of vape products to persons under age 21 as well as the youthful offenders themselves. The Alabama Heart Association urged legislators not to penalize the young tobacco users themselves. The Alabama Heart Association joined a chorus of advocates in a letter to lawmakers calling for lawmakers to remove penalties on kids and hold the tobacco industry accountable. House Bill 319 (HB319), sponsored by State Representative Barbara Drummond (D-Mobile), was advanced by the Committee and could be considered on the Senate floor as early as Thursday. Senate Bill 271, sponsored by State Senator Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman), is the Senate companion

Demopolis healthcare school cause for disagreement

In her annual State of the State address, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey proposed building a boarding school for 14- to 17-year-old students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. That school was to be in Demopolis. Few were aware of the proposal before the governor referenced it in her speech. The healthcare school has become a point of contention in the debate around the education budget package. The budget that passed the Alabama Senate on Thursday replaced the $30 million line item in the governor’s supplemental appropriation request with a $500,000 study by an outside firm to determine the feasibility and the best location for the new boarding school. “It

Police make 6th arrest in Alabama Sweet 16 party shooting

Investigators on Thursday charged a sixth person with reckless murder in connection with a deadly shooting at a Sweet 16 birthday party, saying in court documents they believe gunmen shot into the crowd during the celebration. Investigators said in court documents filed Thursday that they believe five of those charged were present at the party on April 15 and “discharged firearms into the crowd,” resulting in the deaths of four people. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Thursday night announced the arrest of a 15-year-old juvenile from Tuskegee, Alabama, the sixth person charged in the case, but court records were not released because of the person’s age. All six face

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced two additional arrests on Thursday, for a total of five people facing reckless murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting. Alabama teens charged with murder in Sweet 16 party shooting

Two teenagers have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a shooting that killed four young people at a Sweet Sixteen birthday party, Alabama investigators announced Wednesday. Tallapoosa County District Attorney Mike Segrest said the pair — Ty Reik McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16, both of Tuskegee — would be tried as adults. That’s automatically required in Alabama for anyone 16 or older charged with murder. Sgt. Jeremy J. Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency wouldn’t say where the two are being jailed, or whether they were already in custody when they were charged late Tuesday. Authorities did not specify if they were related. “We can’t

372 bills have been filed in Alabama legislative session

Only four legislative days have passed in the 2023 Alabama Regular Legislative Session, but already 372 bills have been filed by legislators. Alabama Today has worked on writing about as many of these as possible so that our readers stay informed on issues before the Alabama Legislature. Two hundred bills were filed in the last week alone. Below is a short recap of 15 of these. Senate Bill 143 (SB143) by State Senator Will Barfoot targets youth gangs. The legislation seeks to identify members of criminal gangs. SB143 would enhance penalties for any criminal activity that benefits, promotes, or furthers the interest of a gang. The bill would establish mandatory consecutive
