State Rep. Darrio Melton elected Selma’s next mayor

Six-year Alabama State Rep. Darrio Melton will be leaving the Alabama Legislature behind to take the helm in the city of Selma.

Melton defeated former Selma mayor James Perkins Jr., the city’s first black mayor, in the city’s mayoral runoff election Tuesday.

Melton received 4,054 votes to 2,558 for Perkins, will take office as mayor Nov. 1.

A special election will be held to fill his House seat.
