House Speaker Paul Ryan told his Republican colleagues on a Monday conference call he will not defend Donald Trump, and will instead focus this next month on maintaining GOP control of Congress.
“The speaker is going to spend the next month focused entirely on protecting our congressional majorities,” said Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong.
Ryan’s decision follows public outrage over Friday’s bombshell release by the Washington Post of Trump’s hot mic recording in which he brags about groping women without their consent. Since the video’s release, lawmakers across the country have pulled their support from Trump.
A source on the call, explains Ryan advised GOP candidates “to do what’s best for you in your district.”
