The federal government may be officially shutdown, but that’s not stopping Sen. Doug Jones from working toward a solution to get it up and running once again.

A little after 11:00 p.m. ET in Washington, D.C. the newly-elected senator took to Twitter Sunday night to give his constituents an update on negotiation efforts to bring an end to the shutdown. While many of his Democratic colleagues have publicly spoken out against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Jones took on a true bipartisan tone in his tweet, noting he was encouraged by McConnell’s comments:

I’ve participated in discussions w/ colleagues from both sides that have focused on finding a bipartisan path forward to keep the gov’t operating. I’m encouraged by the comments made by acknowledging our efforts & the broad interest in finding common ground,” Jones tweeted.

On Friday, Jones cast his most high-profile vote since taking office — in favor of a spending bill that would have altogether avoided a government shutdown. He was one of five Democrats to vote with Republicans on the spending measure.

“Because of CHIP and the many families in Alabama and around our country that would be put in jeopardy by a government shutdown, I felt compelled to vote yes,” Jones said in a statement posted on his Twitter account.
