Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill is projecting a voter turnout of 25 to 30 pecent in the primary election on Tuesday.

In December, Merrill had also estimated 25 percent of voters would turnout for the highly contested special election between Doug Jones and Roy Moore; but more than 1.3 million voters participated, 40 percent.

Nevertheless, the last midterm primary election, in 2014, saw only 22 percent of voters turnout.

There are nearly 3.4 million registered voters in Alabama.
