Rep. Alvin Holmes has been unseated after 44 years in the state house. Holmes lost in the Democratic primary in House District 78 to Kirk Hatcher.

Holmes was known for incendiary remarks throughout his time in the House. Among the most controversial of his comments was a 2014 quote during a debate over abortion in which Holmes said, “”Ninety-nine percent of the all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion,” he said. “On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites who are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion.” Al.Com posted the full audio which you can listen to here.

Hatcher has treaded carefully throughout the election noting his respect for Holmes past service while stressing the need for the state and district to move forward.

In an interview with AL.com, Hatcher says Holmes is not around to fight the way he used to.

“I’ve known of him for many, many, many years,” Hatcher said. “But I also know that he’s no longer able to fight the good fight, so to speak. And his absence has been notable.”

There was no republican in this race so Hatcher will be the next representative for the district.
