Alabama Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh will not run for U.S. Senate next year.

Marsh had considered joining what is expected to be a crowded Republican field vying to recapture the seat held by Sen. Doug Jones. Marsh said Tuesday that he will not join the race.

Marsh said he concluded he would not enjoy Washington because he likes “getting things done.”

As the leader of the Alabama Senate, Marsh is arguably one of the most influential people in state politics. However, at least one poll suggested he would have to work to build name recognition in a statewide race.

Alabama congressman Bradley Byrne and former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville have announced primary bids.

The Anniston Star, Marsh’s hometown paper, first reported the news.
