Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange says he stepped aside from an investigation into House Speaker Mike Hubbard because his campaign used Hubbard’s printing company.

The explanation was included in a Wednesday court filing in which Hubbard’s defense continued to attack the qualifications of the prosecution team leading the case on behalf of Strange.

Strange said the investigation concerned Hubbard’s potential misappropriation of political party funds through his printing business, Craftmaster. Strange said he recused himself because his campaign used Craftmaster.

Hubbard’s defense is challenging Strange’s appointment of retired district attorney W. Van Davis as acting attorney general. Hubbard argues that only the governor can appoint an acting attorney general. Hubbard’s lawyers also say Davis is disqualified from serving as a supernumerary district attorney because he maintains a private practice.
