Officials in Birmingham have approved of removing a Confederate monument from one of the city’s parks.
WBRC-TV reports the Birmingham Parks and Recreation board voted during a Wednesday meeting to remove a Confederate monument from Linn Park.
Board member and former Birmingham mayor Bernard Kincaid says he wants to be respectful of history, but doesn’t think a Confederate monument should be in a city park.
Confederate flags and monuments have come under renewed scrutiny across the country after the shooting deaths of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina. The man charged in their deaths had been photographed several times with Confederate flags before the shooting.
Board members are researching whether any legal barriers could prevent the removal of the monument.
