The Birmingham Business Journal has just written up a survey of Alabama’s top women-owned firms and businesses. Alacare Home Health and Hospice owned by Susan Brouillette pictured above, took home top honors this year. But her success is not mirrored by enough of her colleagues, according to the report.

BBJ Research Director Dan Bagwell writes that while the results are something men and women should take heart in, there is still a great deal of work to be done.

Although Birmingham is home to many successful women-owned businesses, Alabama continues to lag behind other states with regard to economic gender equality. In a recent study measuring women’s earnings and employment by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, Alabama received an ‘F’ and ranked 50th of 51 states (including the District of Columbia).

The following proud Birmingham businesses with the greatest employment footprints in Alabama are as follows:

1. Alacare Home Health and Hospice- 357 employees

2. Vulcan Industrial Contractors- 240 employees

3. Mayer Electric Supply Co. Inc.- 220 employees

4. SGI Delivery Solutions- 125 employees

5. Always There In-Home Care Inc.- 120 employees

But all is not lost for the companies not on this list, writes Bagwell. These firms and others are gaining headway.

The outlook is not completely grim for Birmingham businesswomen, however; several companies in the Magic City continue to post solid gains in both revenue and employee headcount.
