As major health insurers such as Aetna, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare have recently announced their exit from state-sponsored insurance exchanges across the country, the uninsured rate has fallen to a historic low, bringing into question the cost and quality of health care in America. With such developments in mind, the personal-finance website WalletHub has conducted an in-depth analysis of 2016’s States with the Best & Worst Health Care.

They found Alabama has the nation’s 10th-worst health care system, thanks to its low number of physicians, dentists and physicians assistants per capita, among other factors.

For the study, WalletHub researchers analyzed statistics related to 29 key metrics — using three dimensions: health care costs, access and outcomes — to rank the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on their healthcare systems.

Health care in Alabama (1=Best; 25=Avg.):

  • 45th: number of physicians per capita
  • 48th: number of dentists per capita
  • 32nd: physician Medicare acceptance rate
  • 34th: percentage of adults aged 18 to 64 with health insurance
  • 40th: percentage of adults without a dental visit in past year
  • 19th: percentage of medical residents retained
  • 50th: number of physician assistants per capita
  • 51st: infant mortality rate

Here’s a look at how Alabama compares to the rest of the nation:
