Former Alabama House Speaker Tom Drake dies at 86

Former Alabama House Speaker Tom Drake has died.

A native of Cullman, Ala., Drake was 86 when he died Thursday morning, confirms the law office of Drake’s son.

Drake served nine terms in the Alabama House, including two as the House Speaker.

“I  am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Former Alabama House Speaker Tom Drake,” said current House Speaker, Monrovia-Republican state Rep. Mac McCutcheon. “His more than 30 years of public service is a testament to his commitment to this state and to the people of Cullman County.  A legend for not only his political career, he was a storied athlete, a dedicated lawyer, and a much loved grandfather, father, and husband. His loss will not only be felt in Cullman, but across the state. Debbie and I offer our sincere condolences and prayers to Speaker Drake’s family and to the people of Cullman County.”

Following his years in the state legislature, Drake practiced law in Cullman.
