Birmingham City Council extends city-wide face covering requirement

The Birmingham City Council on Friday called a special meeting during which they voted to extend the city’s face covering requirement for two an additional weeks. The original face covering ordinance was set to expire at 5 p.m. Friday evening.

The updated order is effective through June 12 and lowers the penalties for those not wearing a face covering. The original order set a $500 fine and jail time for those disobeying the ordinance. Friday’s extension lowers that fine to $25 on the first offense, $100 on the second, $250 on the third, and removes the threat of jail time altogether.

The City Council passed the extension unanimously.
