Kay Ivey has extended the safer at home order until August 31, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. The order was originally set to expire at the end of this month. The amended safer at home order adds a requirement that masks be worn in schools and colleges. That requirement applies to employees and students in second grade and above.
Ivey’s updated order comes as Alabama’s total number of coronavirus cases reaches 80,000. State Health Officer Scott Harris said previously that it would take two, but preferably three weeks, to judge if the mandate was making a difference in transmission rates.
The statewide mask requirement took effect on July 16th. Hospital leaders urged Ivey to implement the requirement to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.
