In a statement released today, Gina Maiola, Press Secretary for Gov. Kay Ivey, described Kay Ivey’s meeting with the National Governors Association Executive Committee. Governor Ivey participated in the NGA Leadership conference call and stressed that both parties, as well as the executive and legislative branches, need to work to extend the deadline for CARES Act.

The current deadline for spending the CARES Act funds is December 31. During the meeting, the governor underscored to the group that it would benefit the states to remove that barrier and give all states the flexibility to continue spending those dollars in the first few months of 2021.

More than 80 organizations have called on Governor Ivey to spend the funds so that they aren’t returned to the federal government. These advocacy groups for low-income families and people with disabilities sent Ivey a letter suggesting ways to use the money. The groups noted Alabama was one of the poorest states in the country, with 800,000 residents living in poverty “before this pandemic devastated the economy.”
