State government officials say that while there’s an interest in raising teacher salaries next year, it’s too soon to say what a pay raise would look like.

Sen. Arthur Orr, who will take over as chairman of the Senate Finance and Taxation Education Committee next year, tells Al.com that revenue projections for fiscal year 2017 are still unknown. The fiscal year starts next October.

On Thursday, Alabama Department of Education Superintendent Tommy Brice said the department would recommend raising teacher salaries 5 percent.

Chairman of the House Ways and Means Education Committee Rep. Bill Poole says it’s premature to say what percentage a pay raise might be before official revenue projections, which will come early next year.

Since 2008, educators have received one salary increase, which was a 2 percent raise in 2013.
