Alabamians who want to carry a loaded handgun in their vehicles would no longer need to obtain a concealed carry permit under a bill approved by the Alabama Senate Tuesday night.
Senators overwhelmingly approved SB14, 27-7.
Current laws require drivers to have a concealed carry permit for loaded handguns, allowing drivers to carry unloaded handguns only if they are secured out of reach.
But Sen. Gerald Allen (R-Tuscaloosa), the bill’s sponsor, believes a person’s car is an “extension of your home” and gun owners should not have to obtain permits to carry their gun in their property. “You should have the right to defend yourself in your vehicle without having to buy a pistol permit,” Allen tweeted Tuesday.
The measure now moves to the House for consideration.
