House passes legislation so drug dealers can be charged with manslaughter in overdose deaths

On Thursday, the Alabama House of Representatives passed legislation allowing prosecutors to charge a drug dealer with manslaughter if they provide a controlled substance that causes someone to die. House Bill 82 (HB82) was sponsored by State Representative Chris Pringle. Pringle explained that he had friends in Mobile who mortgaged their house, mortgaged everything they had to pay for their son to get through rehab. His drug dealer stalked him. The drug dealer kept calling him, followed him to Narcan on meetings, and even lied to his mother to get his number. Finally, he broke him down. “The drug dealer talked her son into buying an oxycodone laced with fentanyl,

Queen Elizabeth II, a monarch bound by duty, dies at 96

On her 21st birthday in 1947, Princess Elizabeth went on the radio and made a promise to Britain and its Commonwealth nations: She pledged that “my whole life, whether it be short or long, will be devoted to your service.” Over her very long life, Queen Elizabeth II fulfilled that vow. Through 15 prime ministers, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss. Through Britain’s postwar deprivations, crippling labor unrest, and Brexit. Through the messy divorces, embarrassments, and scandals of her family. She endured through it all — a reassuring anchor in a fast-changing world. The longest-reigning monarch that Britain has ever known, Elizabeth died Thursday at 96 at Balmoral

Student loan forgiveness could help more than 40 million

More than 40 million Americans could see their student loan debt reduced — and in many cases eliminated — under the long-awaited forgiveness plan President Joe Biden announced Wednesday, a historic but politically divisive move in the run-up to the midterm elections. Fulfilling a campaign promise, Biden is erasing $10,000 in federal student loan debt for those with incomes below $125,000 a year, or households that earn less than $250,000. He’s canceling an additional $10,000 for those who received federal Pell Grants to attend college. It’s seen as an unprecedented attempt to stem the tide of America’s rapidly rising student debt, but it doesn’t address the broader issue — the

Nick Stehle: The difference between thriving and withering during a pandemic? Good leadership

Naples. Jacksonville. Miami. Destin. San Francisco. As the jingle from Sesame Street goes, “one of these things is not like the others.” If you’ve traveled at all during the pandemic, read a newspaper, or if you generally don’t live in a 1,000-foot-deep hole devoid of all technology, you probably know where I’m going with this. The difference in the quality of leadership throughout the pandemic has been impactful for everyone. This distinction is clear for children who are happy, learning, and thriving at in-person schools – or not learning at all, depressed, and struggling to cope with the reality their government and their parents have thrust upon them

Hurricane Michael

Daniel Sutter: The house that survived the hurricane

Last October, Hurricane Michael slammed the Florida panhandle with 155 mile per hour (mph) winds. Mexico Beach was largely destroyed, except for one exceptional, and now much reported on, house called the Sand Palace. Does it offer a guide for building for the future? Strengthening buildings to reduce damage from natural disasters is called mitigation, and is a topic I have researched. I can’t tell anyone how much they should spend to strengthen their home, but I can help you think about this question. Engineers can design buildings to pretty much withstand nature’s extremes. The Sand Palace was built to withstand 240 mph winds. It is built on 40-foot

White House dogs

A vacant White House job: First Pet

Politically ambitious pups and kittens: Put your resumes aside. The job of first pet – an enviable White House gig with luxurious live-in privileges, after-hours access to the president and guaranteed positive press coverage – is not currently available. That’s because President Donald Trump is not looking for a fluffy sidekick at the moment. Asked about plans for a four-legged addition to the White House, Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for Melania Trump, said in a statement: “The first family is still getting settled so there are no plans at this time.” If Trump stays pet-free, he will be breaking with a long held tradition of presidential pet ownership.

Capitol Hill Buzz: Marco Rubio joke-investigates Ivanka Trump hug

Sometimes all you can do is surrender to Twitter. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio probably started out his day Tuesday thinking about paid family leave, child care tax credits and other deep issues. But when Twitter went wild over an awkward photo of him leaning in for a hug with Ivanka Trump when she arrived for a Capitol Hill meeting, Rubio was smart enough to play along. The photo, taken by an Associated Press congressional reporter with an iPhone, appears to show Trump declining to hug Rubio back as the two greet one another just outside the Capitol. Twitter users dissected the seemingly awkward moment endlessly. They compared Rubio
