William Haupt III: Nancy Pelosi’s home district is a progressive nightmare

“Nancy Pelosi’s district in California has rapidly become one of the worst anywhere in the U.S. when it comes to the homeless and crime. It has gotten so bad, so fast.” – Donald Trump In the 1960s, America’s boomers rebelled against authority and the Vietnam War. They pursued sexual liberation, experimental drugs, communal living, and civil rights. This counterculture lived by the motto “sex, drugs, rock and roll.” In 1967, thousands of hippies and flower children made their way to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco for what was billed as the “Summer of Love” – and many never left. Haight-Ashbury soon eroded into an enclave for dropouts, addicts, and

Joe Biden says he stands ‘squarely behind’ Afghanistan decision

Striking a defiant tone, President Joe Biden said Monday that he stands “squarely behind” his decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Afghanistan as he acknowledged the “gut-wrenching” images coming out of the country after the swift Taliban takeover of the government. Biden said he had to choose between sticking to a previously negotiated agreement to withdraw U.S. troops this year or sending thousands more service members back into Afghanistan to fight a “third decade” of war. Biden, sounding resolute in the face of withering criticism of his handling of the situation, said he chose the first option so as not to repeat past mistakes. He reiterated that he

Senators eye $579B in new infrastructure spending, $1T plan

A bipartisan group of senators is eyeing an infrastructure deal with $579 billion in new spending as negotiators try to strike a nearly $1 trillion deal on President Joe Biden’s top priority, according to those briefed on the plan. The 10 senators have been huddling behind closed doors, encouraged by Biden to keep working on the effort after he walked away from a Republican-only proposal this week, unable to resolve differences. The senators are briefing their colleagues privately and cautioned changes could still be made. “Our group – comprised of 10 Senators, 5 from each party – has worked in good faith and reached a bipartisan agreement on a realistic,

Will Sellers: Loyalty still matters

Always the catch-all political crime, an accusation of treason is used to punish rivals and remove them from civic engagement. Autocrats use the insinuation of treason with brutal efficiency to banish, if not execute, a political problem or inconvenient idea.   While treason is bandied about to characterize someone with whose political beliefs we disagree, our founders made treason a particularly difficult crime to prove. As with so much of the Constitution, the terms were specifically written to prevent abuses witnessed by colonials.  Article III, Section 3 not only provides safeguards that treason not be used to silence political opponents, but it also limits the extent of any

Donald Trump names 2 lawyers to impeachment defense team, one from Alabama

Former president Donald Trump announced a new impeachment legal defense team Sunday, one day after it was revealed that he had parted ways with an earlier set of attorneys with just over a week to go before his Senate trial. The two lawyers representing him will be David Schoen, a criminal defense lawyer with offices in Alabama and New York, and Bruce Castor, a former county prosecutor in Pennsylvania. Both issued statements through a Trump adviser saying that they were honored to take the job. “The strength of our Constitution is about to be tested like never before in our history. It is strong and resilient. A document

Protected or Prisoners: How you can help honor the memory of JoAnn Bashinsky

I’ve been in and around politics for nearly 2 decades in one capacity or another. I’ve learned that the policy changes that really matter and are greatly needed are usually not the ones that get the attention they deserve. We as a nation have a habit of talking about legislation and policymaking in a vacuum. It is as if the only issues that matter are the ones that make headlines or are good for campaign slogans and speeches. Education, taxes, regulatory reform, protecting the 1st and 2nd amendment, or whatever the headline-grabbing topic of the day gets all the attention. Ethics reform here in Alabama is one that

More GOP lawmakers enlist in Donald Trump’s effort to undo Joe Biden’s win

A growing number of Republican lawmakers are joining President Donald Trump’s extraordinary effort to overturn the election, pledging to reject the results when Congress meets next week to count the Electoral College votes and certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas on Saturday announced a coalition of 11 senators and senators-elect who have been enlisted for Trump’s effort to subvert the will of American voters. This follows the declaration from Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, who was the first to buck Senate leadership by saying he would join with House Republicans in objecting to the state tallies during Wednesday’s joint session of Congress. Trump’s refusal to accept

Senators weigh COVID risk for Amy Coney Barrett Supreme Court hearing

Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett vows to be a justice “fearless of criticism” as the split Senate charges ahead with confirmation hearings on President Donald Trump’s pick to cement a conservative court majority before Election Day. Barrett, a federal appeals court judge, draws on faith and family in her prepared opening remarks for the hearings, which begin Monday as the country is in the grips of the coronavirus pandemic. She says courts “should not try” to make policy, and believes she would bring “a few new perspectives” as the first mother of school-age children on the nine-member court. Trump chose the 48-year-old judge after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a liberal icon.

Second amendment rights on the line with Doug Jones U.S. Senate reelection bid

On March 21, 2018, newly elected U.S. Senator Doug Jones gave his first-floor speech. The topic of his speech most certainly was one that is rarely heard from members of the Alabama delegation in either chamber – his support of gun control and restrictions on the nation’s Second Amendment rights. According to an NPR story, Jones said he was supportive of efforts that were discussed and later implemented after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting, including, “moving to ban bump stocks that can convert guns into automatic-style weapons, efforts to strengthen the background check system.” He went on to say those restrictions weren’t enough. Jones “proposed making background checks

Ted Cruz Alabama Crimson Tide football tweet stirs fans, critics

Texas U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz took to Twitter Wednesday night mocking the Ivy League with an Alabama Crimson Tide football team joke. On Wednesday, the New York Post tweeted an article titled, “The Ivy League is cancelling all fall sports, including football” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To which Cruz tweeted, “Finally, Alabama has a chance,” in response as if a top team, like the Crimson Tide, would even be affected by the Ivy League losing their season.
