Email Insights: NRA-ILA alert to Jefferson County

The Jefferson County Election Commission met last month and approved the special election date to fill the Jefferson County Commissioner District 5 vacancy. In May, Steve Ammons left the commission to become the Birmingham Business Alliance (BBA) CEO. Tuesday, July 18, is Special Election Day in Jefferson County for County Commission District 5. The NRA is endorsing conservative candidate Mike Bolin. He is a lifetime resident of Jefferson County and was an attorney in Birmingham from 1973 through 1988 when he was elected as Probate Judge of Jefferson County. He was re-elected to that position in 1994 and 2000. He was elected to the Alabama Supreme Court in January 2005. NRA encourages all

The NRA Political Victory Fund announces primary endorsements

The NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) has announced its endorsements for the May 24 primary in Alabama. The NRA-PVF is NRA’s political action committee. The NRA-PVF ranks political candidates – irrespective of party affiliation – based on voting records, public statements, and their responses to an NRA-PVF questionnaire. Mo Brooks received the endorsement and A rating for the U.S. Senate seat and incumbent Rep. Mike Rogers got an A rating and was endorsed for the U.S. House of Representatives. For the governor’s race, the group gave an A rating and endorsement to incumbent Kay Ivey. Incumbents continued to take the top spots in the Attorney General, State Senate,

NRA endorses Gov. Kay Ivey in governor’s race

The National Rifle Association on Monday endorsed Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey in her bid to win a second full term in office. Ivey, in March, signed legislation abolishing the current state requirement to get a permit to carry a concealed handgun in public. The new law takes effect on January 1. In a brief campaign event announcing the endorsement, Ivey said people in Alabama will stand up for their constitutional rights, including the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. “We demand them, and no one will ever take them away from us. I know they won’t be taking my Smith & Wesson from me either,” Ivey

NRA fleeing New York for Texas using voluntary bankruptcy to restructure

The National Rifle Association announced Friday it has filed for bankruptcy protection and will seek to incorporate the nation’s most politically influential gun-rights group in Texas instead of New York. The announcement made on the NRA’s website comes months after New York’s attorney general sued the organization over claims that top executives illegally diverted tens of millions of dollars for lavish personal trips, no-show contracts for associates, and other questionable expenditures. The coronavirus pandemic has also upended the NRA, which last year laid off dozens of employees, canceled its national convention, and scuttled fundraising. The NRA’s bankruptcy filing listed between $100 million and $500 million in assets and between $100

The National Rifle Association on Friday endorsed former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions over his primary challenger, former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville in their quest for the Republican Party’s nomination in the U.S. Senate race. Jason Ouimet, Chairman of NRA’s political arm, the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF), praised Sessions’ “steadfast support of the Second Amendment.” “Based on your strong leadership on Second Amendment issues as a U.S. Senator and U.S. Attorney General, you have earned the highest attainable rating, an A+ from NRA-PVF. An A+ is reserved for a candidate with an excellent voting record on all critical NRA issues and who has

Debunking a myth: NRA and bill sponsors weigh in on fear of “gun registry” in pending legislation

Several weeks ago, legislation was filed in both the house and senate to change the way that the state of Alabama handles concealed carry permit licenses. The bill allows the state department of law enforcement rather than each of the 67 sheriffs offices to process concealed carry permits and allows for the creation of a lifetime permit.  Senator Randy Price and Representative Proncey Robertson filed HB 39 and SB 47 in their respective chambers. According to their press release at the time of the bills filing their legislation “will establish a cohesive and statewide management level process for administering and managing concealed weapons permits in the state of Alabama.”  When the bill was

NRA lauds pre-filed concealed carry bill which would strengthen gun rights while increasing public safety

Yesterday, Senator Randy Price (R-Opelika) and Representative Proncey Robertson (R-Mt. Hope) pre-filed bills in their respective chambers that according to their press release “will establish a cohesive and statewide management level process for administering and managing concealed weapons permits in the state of Alabama.” In response to a request for comment from Alabama Today, Art Thomm the Alabama State Director of the NRA said, “The NRA strongly supports this streamlined permitting process. Not only would it bring much-needed 21st century technology to Alabama’s antiquated system, but it would be the first time law-abiding Alabamians were given the option for a lifetime concealed carry permit.” Currently, the application process differs each of

NRA beset by infighting over whether it has strayed too far

The National Rifle Association is used to battling forces that criticize its fiery and unbending efforts to protect gun rights. But as the group gathers for its annual convention this week, the NRA may be facing its toughest foe in decades: its own members. NRA insiders and longtime observers describe an organization at war with itself over a central question: Has it strayed too far from its original mission of gun safety and outdoor shooting sports and become too political? It is rare for the NRA to betray any hint of internal turmoil. But it erupted very publicly recently when the NRA sued its longtime public relations firm,

NRA endorses Wes Allen for Alabama State House District 89

The National Rifle Association (NRA) endorsed Wes Allen in his race for the Alabama House of Representatives in District 89, the group announced Monday. An endorsement from the NRA‘s Political Action Committee, the NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF), can be a game changer for many candidates. “When provided with the facts, the nation’s elected officials will recognize that “gun control” schemes are an infringement on the Second Amendment and a proven failure in fighting crime” says the fund. “The importance of this premise lies in the knowledge that, as one U.S. Congressman put it: ‘The gun lobby is people.’” The NRA-PVF makes its decisions based on voting records, public statements and their
