According to a poll by Montgomery based Cygnal, incumbent Senator Doug Jones would lose to either Tommy Tuberville or Jeff Sessions. Further, the poll found that former Auburn football coach Tuberville would beat Jones by a wider margin than Sessions, Donald Trump‘s former Attorney General, would.
Results show Tuberville besting Jones statewide by 13 points and shows Session beating Jones by 10 points. Notably, the poll found Sessions to be trailing Jones in the Birmingham market by 1 point, which is well within the margin of error. Tuberville is not trailing Jones in any market.
Jones’s seat in reliably red Alabama has been identified as a likely loss for Democrats.
“Throughout this race we’ve continued to see Tuberville in the lead, and our polling data before the primary was spot-on” said Brent Buchanan, Cygnal’s CEO and Founder. “Now looking ahead to the general election, Tommy Tuberville is performing stronger against incumbent Doug Jones compared to Jeff Sessions.”
These results follow a general trend where Tuberville has been consistently performing better than Sessions. In fact, another Cygnal poll of likely republican primary voters found Tuberville to be leading Sessions by more than 20 points.
The probabilistic mixed-mode survey was conducted June 13 – 16, with 530 likely general election voters. It has a margin of error of ±4.26%.
